Spotlight: Supermodel Natalia Vodianova
Natalia Mikhailovna Vodianova is a Russian model and philanthropist who now permanently resides in the United Kingdom.
Born in Gorky, USSR (now Nizhny Novgorod, Russia), Natalia Vodianova grew up in a poor district of the city with her mother and two half sisters, one of whom has cerebral palsy. As a teenager, Vodianova helped her mother sell fruit on the street and later set up her own fruit stand with a friend to help her family out of poverty. Vodianova's father walked out on the family when Natalia was a toddler, and she did not have any further contact with him until after she had become famous.
At the age of 15, Vodianova enrolled in a modeling academy and was told she would need to learn English to succeed, and mastered the language in three months. By the age of 17, Vodianova had moved to Paris, and signed with Viva Models.
In November 2001, Vodianova married Justin Trevor Berkeley Portman, a British property heir and half-brother of the 10th Viscount Portmam. In September 2002, over nine months after registering the marriage in the UK, they had a wedding ceremony in St. Petersburg, where Vodianova wore a dress designed by Tom Ford.
Vodianova is a founder and the president of the Naked Heart Foundation, a philanthropic organization that strives to provide a safe and inspiring environment in which to play for every child living in urban Russia. She was inspired to found the charity after visiting Russia with her son Lucas and finding there were no suitable places for children to play. The organization built its first play park in 2006 in Nizhny Novgorod. It has since built nearly 38 more.

Right in the middle of her big U.S. tour—she played New York Monday with Lil Wayne and had the sore throat to prove it last night—Nicki Minaj surprised the packed house during Bid To Save the Earth Tuesday night at Christie’s Auction House in New York with a performance. Sitting in the green room about an hour before her super-secret set was scheduled to begin, we talked with the singer about everything from preshow jitters (she gets them) to preshow routines (green tea and honey)—and how she’s making her own bid to save the Earth.
What are you wearing tonight? Is it one of your favorite designers?
Yes, it is—it’s Alexander Wang. It’s all black, of course, and I knew I needed to get my green on, so that’s how I came up with the green-and-white hair. I have a lot of designers I like right now; I really like Donatella Versace. She sent me a few beautiful things recently to consider wearing to the Grammys and, even though I ended up wearing Givenchy, I believe in supporting women. I’m all about the girl power.
Why did you decide to get involved in Bid to Save the Earth?
I know that a lot of my fans are young and I know I have the power to influence and inspire them by my own actions. I thought that if I got involved in a cause that I felt was important, then maybe they would take the time to research it and find ways they could get involved and make a difference. It’s good to shine a positive light.
If you could enact one rule to help the environment, what would that be?
I think there are a lot of things we could be doing better. I know when I see one of those big, gas-guzzling cars on the road, I cringe because I can’t help but think of all the more efficient alternatives. You don’t need that kind of car. So maybe that would be my rule, that people have to drive cars that are more environmentally responsible.

No, not any more. I used to when I started out just to see if I was on it, but then I realized that reading blogs is a lot more fun when you aren’t being written about—there is so much gossip and so many rumors. The other day, I read that I was pregnant and I thought, That’s crazy! Who is writing this stuff? I don’t need to read that.
What are three things you can’t live without?
Pink lip gloss, pink blush, and black mascara.

DJ SCHEMES
Coming from a long line of DJs, Patrick Fletcher aka “DJ Schemes” recognized his ear for music very early in life. While still in junior high school, he realized that his passion for music and DJing were both things that he wanted to pursue. At the age of 16 he began carrying crates for his older siblings who was working as a DJ at New York City nightclubs. Around this same time he began his official training and apprenticeship underneath this his uncle, cousins, and father who all were once Disc Jockeys. DJ Schemes began his professional career in 2004 while attending West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV. In May 2008, he graduated from West Virginia University and currently resides in Laurel, Maryland. He was employed by Tabu nightclub in Morgantown where he not only works as a DJ, but also serves as host, an event coordinator and organizer for the club and other establishments in the area. He currently spins at Mood Lounge (D.C), LOVE Nightclub (D.C.) The Red Café Lounge (WV). He is also a radio Disc Jockey for 105.3 K Jamz in Tulsa, Oklahoma (www.kjmm.com)
Apart from his great personality and professionalism, DJ Schemes is known for his ability to choose the right song at exactly the right time. This ability allows him to keep his listeners excited, involved, and entertained. He believes that as a DJ it is not only his job to play music, but to connect with his listeners, and to make sure that they are having the best time possible. DJ Schemes continues to advance himself professionally. He continually upgrades his equipment and his music collection so that he can provide his customers with quality music and great experiences. His methods are truly unique and keep his customers coming back. It is easy to say that there is nothing regular or ordinary about a DJ Schemes experience.
